Every March 22 is celebrated as World Water Day to raise awareness of the people living without access to safe water and to advocate for sustainable management of freshwater resources.

Water

As Nigeria joins the world today to commemorate the International day which has the hashtag “Groundwater, making the invisible visible”, residents of Ondo State have called on government at all levels to provide the the people, access to portable water.

While speaking with Niger Delta Connect, Kehinde Ogunkorode said statistics released by the UNICEF shows that about 124,000 children under the age of five die every year because of diarrhea, mainly due to contaminated water, sanitation98and hygiene, stressing that lack of adequate potable water and sanitation are also major causes of other diseases such as typhoid and cholera.

He admonished the present administration in the state led by Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to improve on the water and sanitation sector of the state.

Meanwhile, this international day goes back to the United Nations, UN General Conference on Environmental and Development in Rio De Janeiro in 1992 which was first celebrated in 1993.

This day is set aside to sensitize the world on the essentials of water for every living being. Water is the prime necessity of life. It is the driving force of all nature. It is the fuel of all living animals and plants. Water is life.

However, the negligence of both people and government towards the sanctification of water has compelled human beings to face some improbable problems such as water inadequacy.

While expressing dissatisfaction over the relevance of the International Day on the world, particularly in Nigeria, health personnel, Adetutu Giwa urged Nigerians to be conscious about their use of water.

According to her: “You have to be clean; anywhere you are fetching the water, the environment has to be clean; ensure it is well covered. If you notice that your water is no longer clean, dispose it instead, don’t use it.

“If you want to enjoy life and you want to live longer, you have to be neat. Anything going to the mouth has to be neat’

She stressed, “Cleanliness is the best way to live long in this life. Contaminated water can give you cholera, typhoid, food poisoning as well”

“Government should provide clean water…we don’t want well, it should be borehole”

In the same vein, a businessman and a health specialist, Eniola Oluwaseun described water as “essential something that everybody in life needs.

He however bemoaned the shortage of water and admonished the government to reflect upon the interest of the masses.

“Government is doing nothing on water…we plead to them to consider the masses”

“If Government wants to do it, they know what to do because all these things are still there like Owenna river, there is one in Osun state and another in Oyo state. All these things are still there, it’s just for them to rectify the issues there.

“Every living thing even non-living things need water. I don’t think we need to pray to God, we just need to plead to our Government”

While speaking with a resident identified as Titilope who stressed on the importance of water, urged the government to devise strategies towards curtailing the issue of water shortage.

“There is a scarcity of water in our community…we walk for almost 20km before we get water.

“Government should give us water, already we have a borehole but the borehole has developed a fault. We are begging the government to help us to do another one for us”. She said.

Similarly, a senior secondary student identified as Victor lamented that the shortage of water has affected him.

“Most times, we trek to other streets to fetch water which wastes time because sometimes we may search for water for about 1 hour before fetching just one bucket of water.

“The time wasted could have been used on better things. Government should endeavor to provide boreholes in our community”, he urged.
