The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Abia State, has disclosed that the party has not chosen or anointed anybody as governorship candidate for the 2023 gubernatorial election.
In a Press Briefing at the Party Secretariat, Umuahia, the State Secretary of the party, Barr David Iro, said the PDP as a party has not chosen any candidate, described the information peddling around as a mere speculation from the public.
Iro emphatically stated that the flag bearer of the party would only emerge after the primaries, urging Abians to debunk the rumour.
The Scribe of the party further assured all aspirants that the party would conduct a free,fair and credible elections, as well as offer a level playing ground for all contestants.
He encouraged Abians to respect and concentrate on the zoning formula of Abia central and Abia North senatorial zones.
“We did not say Abia South is not qualified to exercise their civil right, they are qualified, but as a party we are looking at a situation where we will not concentrate power at a particular zone,such that Abia south that is currently occupying the governorship office will not continue in doing so.Based on this,we zoned it to Abia North and Central.
“Certainly, we have not chosen any candidate. Our candidate will emerge at our primaries and we assure that it will be free,fair and credible”,he added
Meanwhile, no fewer than six aspirants have so far declared interest to join the Abia governorship race in the forth coming gubernatorial election under the People’s Democratic Party.
With the declaration of Dr Sampson Orji (Scuorji), the toll of aspirants who have so far indicated interest to run for governorship in Abia State under the PDP, have increased to six, with many others to declare before the close of the date for the sale of form.
Dr Sampson Orji, popularly called Scuorji, who stormed the PDP secretariat in Umuahia with his array of supporters,said he is joining the governorship race to win but not at all cost.
In his declaration speech, Orji promised to run an open door policy, taking away the cover of mystery that refuses people access to the Governor.
According to him,he would simplify the office of the governor, running an all inclusive government.
The governorship aspirant stated that when elected, there will be massive road infrastructures in the state, coupled with a revitalized system where every sector would be functional.
The Abia North Aspirant stated that he is much aware of the paucity of funds in the state,but will go into partnership with companies,as well as adopt the Public Private Partnership (PPP) method and the Build,Operate and Transfer (BOT) to build roads in Abia.
He said in his tenure, the civil service would be revamped, bringing back its pride of place as a noble profession.
Orji noted that he would institute a process of reward and sanctions into the civil service,so as to restore sanity in the system.
“I will be holding quarterly town hall meetings, to discuss and explain to Abians how their monies are being spent and also give them opportunity to ask questions about the state’s finance.
“Accountability, transparency and credibility will be my watch word”,he said.
Responding, the PDP chairman, Rt.Hon Asiforo Okere, commended the qualities of Dr Sampson Orji, who he described as a distinguished personality, that made remarkable feat while serving as a member of the Abia House of Assembly.
The Party chairman, while assuring Orji as well as other aspirants of a level playing ground,urged them to go and mobilize support ahead of the party primaries.
