The National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Barrister Julius Abure, has issued a Certificate of Return, to the party’s Abia State Governorship flagbearer, Dr Alex Otti, at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja for the 2023 general elections.

The national leadership of the party including the National Treasurer, Mrs Oluchi Opara and the National Vice Chairman South South of the party, Prince Reuben Favour, were amongst the dignitaries that attended the presentation of Certificate of Return ceremony.

In his speech, Dr Otti expressed confidence that the Labour Party in them state will be victorious in the general elections, noting that Abia State is amongst the least developed states in Nigeria and further emphasized that Abians deserve good governance and infrastructural development.

Recall that Dr Alex Otti was hitherto a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, but in May 2022, he announced his withdrawal from the governorship primaries of the APC on the grounds that the national leadership of the party All Progressives Congress were negating true democratic principles in the conduct of its gubernatorial primary election in the state.

He explained that his decision was taken after due consultation with his party stakeholders and supporters including the respected leaders of the APC within and outside Abia State. He further accused the party of imposing a strange sharing formula on the party’s aspirants in Abia State, and that more than 90 per cent of the aspirants and stakeholders of the party opposed that decision.

He stated that an appeal was submitted to the leadership of the party to allow an open contest that would give room for the emergence of popular candidates, who would enjoy the support of party members and the electorate during the general election, but the party stuck to its decision to go by way of imposition of aspirants.
