Tragedy was averted on Monday when an Aero contractor’s flight from the Port Harcourt International Airport Omagwa, to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, suddenly lost one of its engine.
The plane, a Boeing 737-400 with four crew members and over 80 passengers on board, including a former first lady of Bayelsa State, was ten minutes into the 45 minutes journey when the pilot announced that one of the engines has developed a major fault.
The announcement threw most of the passengers into panic mode, as some of them who belong to the Christian faith, began to pray, some speaking in tongues and calling on the name of the Almighty to save them from untimely death.
“It was not a funny thing. Immediately the pilot announced that one of the engine had gone bad and we can’t continue the journey, come and see panic. People were praying, shouting. It was a terrible experience but we thank God” one of the passengers said.
The pilot however landed the faulty plane safely with the other engine to the admiration of the passengers and staff of the airline and the Port Harcourt Airport, who had gathered to receive them.
Another passenger told our correspondent that the intervention of God and the experience of the pilot was what saved the day, “otherwise we all could have died within minutes because it was a close shave with death”, he said.
We gathered that most of the passengers were Bayelsans and aside the former first lady, there were two serving members of the House of Representatives from Bayelsa and their aides that were on board the plane.
As at the time of filing this report, the management of the airline was yet to release an official statement on the incident and a message sent to their customer service by our correspondent had not gotten a reply.
