Busisiwe Labi, a 34-year-old South African lesbian, has bags 22 years and six months jail term for killing her two kids to upset her homophobic grandmother.
On Thursday, August 19, Judge Belinda Hartle of the Bhisho High Court in the Eastern Cape sentenced Labi to life in prison for each of the children’s murders, but ordered that the terms run concurrently.
Labi had lived in Dimbaza with her children, mother, and two siblings, according to NPA Regional spokesperson Anelisa Ngcakani , informed her children about her plans to kill them before carrying them out. Amyoli, the eldest boy, begged her and said mom don’t do it, but his appeal fell on deaf ears. She prayed with the boys, then took turns in suffocating them with plastic bags and pillows before arranging their bodies neatly on the bed.
On July 22, 2021, Labi was found guilty of the two murder charges. Labi confessed being gay in sexuality since her Grade 7 and that her family did not approve of her preferred sexuality, according to a Psycho-Legal study given in court.
According to the investigation, Labi claimed that she had straight relationships with her children’s fathers since her family did not approve of her homosexuality and her mother desired grandchildren. She went on to say that she had relationships in order to appease her mother.
During her sentencing, Judge Belinda Hartle described Labi as a woman who didn’t want to be a mother but she loved her kids before the killing and she further said that Labi had a tumultuous connection with her mother, who reputedly never revealed Labi’s father’s identity until she was in high school. According to the article, Labi was angry with her mother and felt betrayed.
A day before she assassinated her sons Labi and her mother had a heated argument because her mother gave her younger brother money that was supposed to be used for household supplies. Labi had the impression that her mother preferred her brother more. During her sentencing, Labi admitted to killing her two sons because she wanted to upset her mother, because she has a close relationship with her grandchildren,” Ngcakani said.
Labi called her 42-year-old sister after killing her kids and told her what she had done. The incident was reported to the police, who discovered the boys’ dead bodies at their home.
Despite agreeing with the prosecutor, Advocate Deolin Willemse, that the crimes were “spine-chilling,” “horrific,” and that “leniency for mercy’s sake would be wrong,” Judge Hartle ruled that there were compelling circumstances in the case to diverge from the mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison.
Despite the fact that the murders were premeditated in the sense that she waited until she was alone with the children in the house to murder them, Labi cooperated with police from the start and gave a detailed confession of the events leading up to the murders as well as the actual murders, according to Judge Hartle.
