Schedule your day
Having a schedule of your daily activities will help you to plan how to manage both your personal and professional task, without any creeping into the other. There may be distractions but sticking to it would help. You can choose to have two separate to do list, one for career the other for personal. Be very decisive about the way they are handled. Remember that the goal is for both to be balanced without any being affected negatively.
One of the major limitations that could be a pose to balancing your work and personal life is procrastination. You may have probably planned to attend to the personal schedule list at a particular time, but then you discovered that there are still work related things you should finish up. It is advisable that you follow the scheduled list and then come back to the earlier schedule.
When procrastination comes and you feel unmotivated, remember what made you take up that career, school or projects in the first place. Also remember the importance of personal things such as family and friends. Another way to beat procrastination for getting things done is to break larger projects down.
Create separate time for work and personal life
When you are at your work or business area, give it your full attention but when you are at home, avoid not to carry work home, especially if it’s avoidable.
Avoid distractions when you are attending to task at work or home. Distractions affect productivity and result. Research has it that most people spend about 20 minutes of every hour handling unplanned distractions. This eventually leads to trying to refocus . WikiHow, a publication suggested these tips for eliminating distractions:
- Focus on important rather than urgent tasks – urgent tasks are reactive-based, important tasks are proactive-based
- Turn off the notifications on your phone or computer
- Create a clean and clutter-free work space
Be mindful of your health
Most times, in trying to meet the need of our work and the need of our family and friends, we neglect our health. It is important to be mindful of the state of our health. The need of others at work , school or home can overwhelm our own physical needs thereby resulting into having a costly consequences to our health which will in turn affect them too.
Sometimes no matter how hard one tries, one of the responsibilities either at work or home becomes more demanding. This is when you learn to be creative and think of possible and easier ways to tackle urgent priority even as you are attending to the other. Depending on which is urgent, you can share your work at the office or ask a colleague to assist while you attend to your family or call your family and inform them earlier that you would be late for a meeting or hang out and make it up to them another time.
