A total of 60 and 50 patients with cases of hernia and cataract respectively were diagnosed at the flag-off of free medical outreach of Miriam Onuoha, member representing Okigwe North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
The event held at Primary Health Centre, Umuagwo Okwelle Community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State.
The Chairman, Technical Committee of the outreach, Dr. Sharon disclosed that the health personnel involved in the outreach carried out successful surgeries on five of the hernia patients at the flag-off while the rest would be done subsequently.
Sharon further disclosed that the programme is being undertaken by 10 units of medical personnel made up of surgical team of three surgeons, vital science unit made up of 18 nurses and health officers.
Others are eye unit with three doctors present and nine to join soon at the three centres and two laboratories manned by a 10-member team.
The rest are seven general consultants who are responsible for handling general cases, while each centre will have a pediatrician and three doctors subsequently.
Sharon further disclosed that the pharmacy unit is made of eight pharmacists responsible for the administration of medicine to the patients.
According to him, the General and Accreditation Unit is in charge of registration and attendance of patients.
He revealed that about 2,000 registration forms had been distributed, stressing that about 1,000 people had successfully registered for the outreach.
Sharon said ophthalmologists who are responsible for the cataract surgeries would be available the next day to handle the cases.
In her speech, Miriam Onuoha lauded the people of Okigwe North for their support to her.
She also thanked them for the mandate given to her to serve and promised to deliver the goods to the people.
She listed the five bills she has sponsored to include the bill for the establishment of Federal College of Horticulture and Management Science in Okigwe zone.
She further noted that motions and petitions have been raised by her on the disturbing issues of power outages in the zone which have gotten the desired attention.
The lawmaker disclosed that she and her team have embarked on Nutritional Support and Free Home delivery programme to feed the indigent and vulnerable.
According to her, several classroom blocks have equally been rebuilt and constructed to enhance teaching and learning in the constituency.
In her words, “I have attracted road projects and cassava processing mills. I have engaged in many rural development projects and installation of transformers. My office has sponsored over 65 pupils in public schools in Okigwe North who were adjudged the best graduating students as reported by their principals. We will make sure we sponsor to JAMB and through our bursary once they get admission which we will also facilitate.”
Onuoha equally stated that not only will people get free medical care during the outreach, but free home visitations and nutritional support will also be carried out to ensure that patients are adequately taken care of till they fully recover.
She disclosed that the reason for flagging off the outreach at Onuimo is because it is the headquarters of the Okigwe North and her passion for Okwelle Community being the land of her birth.
Gift items such as mattresses, bed covers and mosquito nets were distributed to the patients who were operated on.
The patients expressed their gratitude to Miriam Onuoha and her team for carrying out the outreach.
They pledged their support to her and vowed to cast their votes again for her in 2023 if she chooses to seek reelection.
Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma was represented on the occasion by the state Commissioner for Health, Okorochukwu; while Austin Okeji of the Ministry of Health, and Director-General of the Miriam Campaign Organization, Bright Nwachukwu also attended the flag off ceremony.
