The Mayor of Port Harcourt City in his youth empowerment scheme and skill acquisition training has displayed high sense of trust and his magnanimity depicts his willingness to tackle unemployment, socioeconomic independence and development.
In furtherance, and considering the contemporary need for technical expertise in industrial operations, there should thus be a focus on technical trainings to improve capabilities in the production of electrical; electronic/hardware/equipment’s to complement technical hardware importations.
It is worth noting that the Rivers State Government under the administration of His Excellency, Chief Barrister Ezebunwo Nyesom, Wike (CON, POS Africa), the Executive Governor of Rivers State, has put the frame works in place to achieve some of these societal technical prerequisites.
For instance, the Rivers State Government has equipped the Government Craft Development Center with sophisticated machines capable of enhancing further production.
The Mechanical, Electrical, Fabrication, Electronics, Design and decorations etc Departments of Craft Development Center, are equipped with machineries or gadgets capable of enhancing fabrications of technical tools.
Therefore, I call on the Lord Mayor of Port Harcourt, Sir Honorable Allwell Ihunda JP, to carry out a critical inspection of the said institution to harness the resources thereat, as additional value to complement the City Council’s resources for manpower development.
Subsequently, the Lord Mayor is hereby reminded about the resourcefulness of the Garison Phones Repair Centre where assorted or varieties of phones are repaired and sold.
This place has technicians with wide range of experiences in the repairs or maintenance of virtually all types of phones, computers, and does their jobs with great success.
To this end, I submit the following as suggestion or proposition:
1. That there should be a technical team or committee saddled with the responsibility of having data of institutions in Port Harcourt that has technical facilities to enhance training and skill acquisition.
2. Organize theoretical trainings for the workforce at places where there are group technical activities like garrison phone repair centre, to update their intellectual capacity as to align with modern intellectual routine.
3. Use same medium to train others in electronics equipments etc, by utilizing institutions or group technical centers, (for instance phone and computer hardware and software services) for developmental purposes.
4. Use same group to further advance and attempt manufacturing of simple phone system, computers, technical tools and much more.
The Lord Mayor of Port Harcourt is graciously advised to please consider a critical inspection of the said Government Crafts Development Center, inspection of technical groups or institutions in Port Harcourt and to set up technical committee to proffer modalities for advancement of technical acquisition, production, as well as services in the technical sectors.
REASONS: suffice to state clearly that Port Harcourt is hosting petroleum, gas, construction, technical services, logistics etc companies. Therefore there is very urgent need to equip the city with capable skills and manpower to service these companies that would need essential workforce for their operation.
Lack or low supply of technical personnel to the firms implies that the City will be handicapped in those sectors hence affect the technical development of the City.
Industrial development is enhanced by technical abilities and its absence means low industrial growth hence the training of personnel to acquire technical skill is very vital.
The Lord Mayor is prayed to please consider this opinion and act as deemed wise by his administration.
