It was an unpleasant scene today at Hotel De La Paiz, Aba, as residents held the member representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, hostage, refusing him exit, over two thousand naira.
The situation went out of control at the Hotel De La Paiz, venue for the Thank-You-Ceremony organised by the House Member, to appreciate his constituents for voting him into the Federal House. As the Member, Hon Chimaobi Ebisike, announced he would be sharing wrappers and money to his constituents who came to grace the occasion, hell was let loose.
Few minutes after making the announcement, the whole venue was packed full with people both women, men and youths numbering over five thousand, perhaps they were called on the phone to come and partake of the national cake.
The Lawmaker who decided to handle the sharing single handedly, maybe for the fear of the unknown, got overpowered by the crowd who scampered to get their own share of two thousand naira.
The sharing was actually going on smoothly until hoodlums hijacked the process, stormed the venue to get their own share too.
This time, the situation was no longer controllable, as the youths surrounded the House member who was moving back and forth to get an opportunity to escape.
The member was pulled down severally, yet these youths did not relent, as they were bent to take their share of the money.
The ruffling on the lawmaker continued for hours to a point he almost fought the hoodlums with bare hands. Already the hoodlums have started breaking bottles, preparing to fight the lawmaker, if not for the timely intervention of some of the lawmakers loyalists.
Though, the lawmaker succeeded in distributing the wrappers to the women especially to those who could beat the crowd to get to him, but could not withstand the sharing of the stipend.
His T-shirt was torn and full of stains, as a result of the ruffling from different angles.
Some youths were heard making fun of the lawmaker and the scenario, as though the act was deliberate.
Some of them said, “They will not allow him to go as he feels he is smart”. Others said, “his curiosity landed him in the mess”. They said he should have delegated people to share the money on his behalf.
Another set of youths stated that the lawmaker should have made the event a two day event, one day for the Aba North constituents and another day for Aba South.
According to the youths, the sharing should have been done on ward level.
The lawmaker tried to disperse the crowd, but all his attempts failed. If he moves a step, they move with him like bees securing honeycomb.
The situation continued until 7:00pm when officers of the military stormed the Hotel premises in their numbers.
They shot into the air to disperse the angered youths, before they could rescue the House member who was already loosing strength.
