The family of Senator Nelson Effiong, a former senator who represented Eket Senatorial district of Akwa Ibom State at the 8th Assembly has denied the rumour that their brother, Effiong has died in custody or has been released.
It could be recalled that the ex Senator was kidnapped at his sit-out located along Oron road, Uyo, the state capital on Sunday, September 5, 2021 by unknown gunmen who stormed the venue in a Toyota Camry.
Today has made it the seventh Sunday in captivity.
Events since his abduction, there have been agitations for his release especially from his Oron kinsmen even as the Commissioner of Police, CP Andrew Amiengheme has reassured of commitment for his safe return and the apprehension of culprits.
The social media however have lately been awash with the report of his release as well as reports of his death while in captivity.
Senator Effiong’s family when contacted dismissed the reports describing them as fake.
The younger brother, Prince Effiong who spoke on behalf of the family said, “I have heard the rumour that he has been killed. He is alive. He has not been killed. When somebody die, there is no way you can hide it. Also, he has not been released. The family is also saying that he has not been released.
“You can quote me, that I said the report that he has been released is not authentic.”
However, some sources from Oron, the country home of the kidnapped politician-cum businessman, have wondered why it is taking this long for him to be released.
Nelson Effiong who left office as Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in 2007 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) later joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2018.
