People of Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have on Thursday warned the neighboring community of Eket local council against issuing threats to a prospective refinery company, BUA refinery to vacate the area.
Recall that the people of Eket and Esit Eket local government had issued a quit notice to BUA refinery not to operate in the area as they claimed that the proposed land for citing the project belongs to them.
But, in a press conference held at Upenekang area of Ibeno, the people said they would not keep quiet and allow a prospective investor leave due to the excesses of the Eket community, stressing their determination to protect the personnel of the company as well as ensuring it’s unhindered operations in the community.
The statement signed by the joint council chairman and the secretary respectively, Ikoedem Ekong and Tom Afia, issued to journalists in Uyo wondered why the state government kept mute over the threats of Eket people against the investor even as it has been preaching that investors should come in.
They reasoned that BUA Group if allowed to operate in the state would be the only refinery in Nigeria which would be beneficial to Akwa Ibom people as well as Nigerians in general.
According to the statement, “We regard the recent brazen and audacious quit notice which the Ekid people have issued to BUA group, a prospective investor as baseless. While we repeat that these people have always been on hand to kill prospective projects not minding how their selfish and baseless attitude affect the general good which those projects have the potentials to bring to the entire state, we hope that the government of Akwa Ibom State has paid attention to the continuous insults threats and disdain meted out against Ibeno by the Ekids these past months.
“To this end, we wish to sound a note of warning that: no part of Ibeno land belongs to Eket. BUA refinery is to be located in Ibeno. Ibeno will not tolerate any trespass to its land.
“Ibeno will defend BUA activities, its personnel both local and expatriates. Ibeno will never take up arms against Eket but we will not fold our hands and watch the activities of miscreants in our land.
“If one leaf is taken from Ibeno into Eket, we will enter and collect twelve leaves, we will equally not permit one BUA personnel to be hurt or killed by Eket in the course of carrying out their legitimate construction work in Ibeno which will be a blessing to Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria as a whole.
“We know that there is no developmental strides carried out anywhere in the state that will not have a constructive and positive impact on all members of the state.
“The skittish and erratic behaviour of the people of Ekid cannot therefore be explained except that they have considered themselves untouchables or they have exclusive rights to foment trouble.
