Suspected armed robbers on Monday attempted to rob a bank customer in Yenagoa the Bayelsa State capital but the incident led to a major accident.
It happened along the Sani Abacha express road by Ebis Mechanic Junction when a Toyota Camry saloon car was trailed and shot at by the robbers.
Our correspondent gathered that the robbers were monitoring the driver of the car and as soon as he drove out from the premises of one of the new generation banks in the area, they attempted to double cross him.
According to an eyewitnesses :
“The robbers who were fully armed were monitoring the guy. I think they must have gotten some information about him because it was like they were acting on a tip off. So they laid ambush as soon as he drove out of the bank.
“The Toyota Camry he was driving, skidded off its own lane, smashed the street light on the road demarcation before an head-on collusion with a tricycle in the opposite direction which resulted in multiple accidents and casualties.
“It was a clear case of an attempted robbery and it happened so fast that you will think it was an action movie. We all didn’t understand what was happening until the robbers fired the first shot then it dawn us as we all took cover for fear of being hit by stray bullets”.
It was not clear if the robbers succeeded in carting away the money that the driver of the saloon car had gone to withdraw from the bank as they hurriedly left the scene when the accident attracted the attention of other motorists and passers-by.
Our correspondent gathered that the driver of the Toyota Camry, as well as the tricycle driver and his passengers were all rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yenagoa, for medical attention.
When contacted Mr. Asinim Butswat, the Spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, said he has not been officially briefed about the incident.
