Security operatives have reportedly neutralised the hoodlums terrorizing the Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The success of the operation was as a result of the combined forces of the Nigerian Army and the Police.
The operation followed the incessant attacks by gunmen in the area. It was gathered that the area became tensed as residents live in constant fear due to the several attacks carried out by the hoodlums, who have acquired sophisticated weapons to carry out their destardly act.
Spokesman of the Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Yerima, noted that in the latest of the attacks, the hoodlums killed some policemen in the area including a yet-to-be-identified Chief Superintendent of Police and carted away their rifles.
Yerima added that the spate of attacks prompted the troops to join forces with other security agencies in order to restore normalcy to the area.
According to him, the security situation in Akwa Ibom State has been very peaceful until recently when hoodlums and criminal elements constantly cause chaos in the state.
He noted that the miscreants exploited various avenues which resulted in the loss of lives and carting away of weapons.
Speaking further, he added that the operation was successfully executed which resulted in the dislodgement of the criminals while fleeing hoodlums were neutralised by the air component.
“Normalcy has been restored in the area while the Police personnel have since assumed full control and carrying out normal duties”, the Daily Trust reports.
