Dr Obadiah Mailafia, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has said the banditry situation currently faced in the country was ignited by some desperate political detractors who wanted Goodluck Jonathan out of office by all means.
Mailafia made this shocking revelation while speaking in an interview session with Punch Nigeria.
According to him:
During the 2015 elections they brought in thousands of foreigners into this country, armed them because it was a case of if Goodluck Jonathan doesn’t surrender, there will be war. They were ready for civil war; they were not ready for peace.
Of course, Jonathan handed over to them and then they turned their backs on the hoodlums and the hoodlums said ‘look, you brought us here and we are still here’.
Malafia, a former presidential candidate in the last presidential election says he believes strongly that the fingers of some international forces are also powering agents of insurgency and banditry in the nation.
“There are certain world powers that want to destroy our country. That is what I believe. There was a container load of weapons that were brought in from Turkey. Another time some were brought in from Iran. But nobody probed further and everything was swept under the carpet and that was the end of it,”
Recall that Malafia was some time last year invited by the Department of State Security over accusing a certain northern governor of being a Chief Commander of the deadly Boko Haram sect.
The former CBN governor also reacted to the manner in which controversial northern leader Sheikh Gumi was handling the current incessant.
Kidnappings in the region, saying it is abruptly wrong for Gumi to be seeking amnesty for bandits.
Malafia openly distinguished between Militancy in Niger Delta and the current catastrophic banditry activity eating up the country.
I do not believe that the Niger Delta militancy can be compared to the terrorists. These people (terrorists) are not even bandits. A bandit is a common thief or a brigand. The ‘agbero’ are bandits. These people carrying sophisticated weapons and rockets are not bandits. They are terrorists.
“They have killed, they have maimed, they have raped and they have wreaked havoc,”
This is coming after self acclaimed negotiator and northern leader, Sheik Gumi hinted that the bandits may need to be given an olive branch and a possible hand of amnesty by the government to help curb the menace they are causing in the country.
