Following the recent attack of the Bayelsa State owned Diete Koki Memorial Hospital, Opolo, Yenagoa, the Chairman of the State Hospital Management Board, Dr. Inodu Apoku, accompanied by the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Doubra Doukumor and Members of the Board, on Thursday visited the hospital to ascertain the situation.
A fortnight ago, some unidentified gunmen had raided the hospital and carted away some amount of cash and other valuables belonging to the doctors on duty, patients and their relatives.
The hoodlums were alleged to have entered the hospital from the perimeter fence behind the building and gained entrance to the wards and offices after forcing their way through.
Less than a week after the incident, a group of suspected armed robbers again attacked a member of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC), Miss Ogechi Wilfred, who is attached to the hospital and dispossessed her of her valuables.
She was stopped right in front of the hospital by the four-man gang, who came with a tricycle, popularly known as “Keke”,
when she went to get some items at a store beside the medical facility.
Worried by the incessant attacks, Dr. Inodu Apoku said aside coming to ascertain the situation of things in the hospital, the board also came to commiserate with members of the management and staff.
He assured that the government will swing into action and address the challenges bedeviling the hospital, including security.
The Head Doctor of Diete Koki Memorial Hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Ayibatonye Fetepigi, thanked the Chairman and members of the board for the visit, saying it gives them a sense of hope and assurance.
While narrating the incident, a staff of the hospital, Dr. Okeleghel Awudumapu said the armed gang came at about 3 a.m, took over the place, ransacked everywhere before fleeing through the same way they came.
