The Bayelsa State Government has called on residents of the state to invest in agriculture, especially snail farming as a way of boosting the state’s economy.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Chief David Alagoa made the call during a training session organized by a consultant in snail farming, Dr. Ukonu Ukonu in Yenagoa.
The Commissioner urged Bayelsans to take advantage of the value chain in snail farming, as various benefits can be derived from it, both nutritional and pharmaceutical.
He assured of the state government’s commitment to continually support farmers in the state, in order to build a robust economic system.
Dr Ukonu, while highlighting the potentials in snail farming, said beyond its nutritional benefits, it is a huge market for cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
He stated that snails can improve the health of pregnant women and babies, saying it also leads to glowing skin and retentive memory.
He added that the slime from snails is a powerful chemical used for cosmetic or beauty products and its serum extracts are used for the treatment of stress and depression.
Dr Ukonu described snails as a blood tonic and called on the Bayelsa State Government to invest heavily in snail farming.
He appealed to the organized private sector to also invest in the snail value chain in order to promote a healthy lifestyle and increase financial earnings.
