Bayelsa State is expected to receive the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines from the Federal Government today (Wednesday).
Nigeria had last week Tuesday received 3.92 million doses of the vaccine, which is
the first shipment for the over 16 million doses allocated to the country through the COVAX Facility.
The vaccines which are developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, is aimed at vaccinating 20% of the country’s population.
Already, some states have received the vaccines and have started vaccinating according to set priorities, beginning with frontline health workers and other support staff.
Governor Douye Diri alongside other senior officials of his government are expected to receive the vaccines on behalf of the state and deploy them according to the scheduled guidelines laid down by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).
Bayelsa is among the last batch of states that will receive the vaccines and it is expected that the state-wide rollout of the vaccine will commence from Friday across the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari, his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo were last week Friday vaccinated by their personal physicians while Cyprian Ngong, a medical doctor, became the first person to receive a jab of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines in the country, to further drive its acceptance
