A youth group from Bayelsa West Senatorial District has condemned an alleged attack on some political leaders of Ekeremor Local Government Area over the issue of zoning in the District.
The leaders and elders were said to be on their way to a meeting on zoning between Sagbama and Ekeremor Local Government Areas for the National Assembly in 2023 when they were attacked.
The group, Bayelsa West Frontiers for Solidarity described the attack as crude, barbaric and a great disrespect for the leaders and elders.
In a statement signed by Comrade Odogu Kerike and Mr. Seibide Finine, the group said they are saddened by the alleged attack on Rt. Hon. Boyelayefa Debekeme, a former Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, and Hon. Famous Daunimughan, by the hoodlums suspected to have acted on the instructions of a former Chairman of Ekeremor Local Government Council.
They said the former council boss is hell-bent on disrupting the zoning arrangement by contesting a seat in the House of Representatives in the next elections.
The group cautioned that any politician who wish to contest for the National Assembly from Ekeremor should run for the Senate as the House of Representatives slot is zoned to Sagbama.
Meanwhile, notable political leaders from Ekeremor Local Government Area have also vowed to resist any attempt to disrupt the mutual zoning pact.
Mrs. Jane Alek, Hon. Ken Kaiama and Barr. Japan Udoji insisted that the zoning is a family arrangement that is mutually beneficial and no politician, no matter how highly placed, should deviate from it.
Presenting a communique at the end of a meeting attended by Ekeremor Elders and Political Leaders under the umbrella of Ekeremor Local Government Elders Forum in Yenagoa, Barr. Fedude Zimughan said, “no reasonable and patriotic citizen from the zone will do anything ungodly to cause disunity between the Local Government Areas with a view to truncating the zoning”.
They pledged their continuous support for Governor Douye Diri’s Prosperity Administration and equally prayed for peace and development in Sagbama/Ekeremor and Bayelsa State at large.
The Ekeremor Local Government Elders’ Forum expressed appreciation to Governor Douye Diri and his Deputy, Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo for standing on zoning in the 2020 Senatorial by-election in Bayelsa West and appealed to them to assist in consolidating it.
The Elders further said they are thankful to all the political parties that converged on Sagbama to uphold the existing zoning regarding the National Assembly seats between Sagbama and Ekeremor on Saturday, July 18, 2020.
They pledged their continuous support for Governor Diri’s administration and equally prayed for peace and development in Sagbama/Ekeremor and Bayelsa State at large.
