The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), on Wednesday presented some science equipments to the Bayelsa State Government, to boost learning in science related subjects in public schools.
The equipments were procured by the NDDC in 2019 for select schools in the nine states that make up the Niger Delta.
Making the presentation in Yenagoa, Mr Kelechi Nwele Kelly, the NDDC Representative in Bayelsa State listed the schools to receive the equipments.
They include; Nembe National Grammar School Nembe, Government Secondary School Twon-Brass, River Nun Secondary School Agbere, Community Secondary School Agudama-Epie, Matter Dei High School Imiringi, Community Secondary School Okoloba, Southern Ijaw Modern Secondary School Oporoma, and Community Secondary School Ekeremor.
Receiving the items, the Commissioner for Education, Gentle Emelah Gentle, thanked the commission for the items but frowned at the procedure through which the equipments where delivered to the state.
He noted that the NDDC was created to foster development in the region as an interventionist agency and as such must carry every state along in its plans, policies and programmes.
He decried the situation where the south south zone will converge to do a flag-off of project and a critical state like Bayelsa will not be represented, describing it as very embarrassing to the state.
“We were not aware and only for us to get the information that materials are coming into the state but be that as it may, the end users of these products are our children in our schools and we wouldn’t want to deprive them the use of the science equipments, but we should have a more interactive relationship moving forward” he said.
He assured the NDDC that Bayelsa State will ensure the equitable distribution of the materials and ensure that the schools make judicious use of them for the overall benefit of the state and Niger Delta.
The equipment received include farm tools, laboratory equipments among other learning materials.
The Commissioner was accompanied to receive the items by the technical adviser to the Governor on NDDC, Kuro Matthias Nyenye.
