Talented singer and grammy award winner, Damini Ogulu known popularly as Burna Boy, becomes the first African artiste to get three straight BET nominations and wins as he clinched an award in the Best International Act category.
The 2021 BET Awards, which took place on June 27, 2021 is a ceremony geared towards celebrating the achievements of various talents in entertainment, sports and television. The ceremony’s theme was “Year of the Black Woman” and was held virtually.
The singer was nominated alongside other big artistes such as Wizkid and Diamond Plantinum in the same category.
Following his recent win, Burna Boy has set a new record on the African continent as he becomes the first African artiste to get three straight BET nominations and wins.
The singer had earlier won at the 63rd Grammy award with his album ‘Twice as Tall’, which also made him the first Nigerian to ever win a Grammy, an honour for which he was celebrated in his home town in grand style.
It will be recalled that Burna Boy won the prestigious award for the “Best Global Music Album” at the 63rd Grammy awards with his album, “Twice As Tall”. but the ceremony was a virtual one thus he was not there to physically lift his trophy.
The singer recently took possession of his trophy plaque in Nigeria and shared a post on his Instagram page to confirm that.
Burna Boy has been able to prove that Africans can go beyond their territories to achieve greater feats with their talents and get global recognition.
Nigerian artistes are going out of their way to prove that they can meet up with international standard as they continue to go global.
Wizkid had also been able to clinch an international award when he got featured in Beyonce’s hit song ‘Brown Skin Girl’.
