There has been a sickening twist in the Chidinma Ojukwu and Usifo Ataga saga. It is an attempt, deliberately or not, to obstruct ongoing investigation. Those behind it, are self titled social media commentators who are not resting. Minute by minute, they are churning out conspiracy theories over the unfortunate incident.
In one of the commentaries, it was alleged that the murder of Ataga was a hatched job, planned by his “estranged” wife and her boyfriend, who is related to the main suspect, Miss Chidinma. This particular narrative has spread like wild fire and has gained an unimaginable level of currency especially among gullible people.
In another conspiracy theory, it was said that Chidinma has been in the business of blackmail for a long time. This particular narrative was from a lady who alleged that the 21 year old murder suspect had used the bank account of her gateman to receive proceeds of her blackmail from one of her vicitims many years ago. Going by this tale, it means Chidinma had been in the “business” even as an early teenager.
In yet another flying account, Chidinma was accused of killing Ataga because of the money she found in his account. The purveyors of this storyline said “having seen the billions of naira in his account, she became very demanding and since she already knew the pin to his ATM card, she decided to take her chances that day by killing him”.
There are many of these stories being peddled online. Those behind them crafted them in a manner that they become impossible not to believe. They were emphatic in their submissions and so sure about their sources. Some even gave the impression that they witnessed the murder. Like the first account; “the intention was not to kill him but when she discovered that he had died, she quickly called her uncle, (Brenda’s boyfriend), who immediately sent his boys to go and remove all the instruments in the house and escape with her”.
Most of the stories published on social media on the unfortunate incident are false and malicious. They are even more intended to embarass the deceased family, distract the police and provide a cover for the perpetrators.
While we applaud the interest of Nigerians in the case, we want to state that the unsolicited analysis of what transpired is not healthy for the ongoing investigation, and as such we plead with those behind it to desist and allow the police to do their job. This is one case that the world is waiting to hear how it will end. It should not be compromised by mischief and mischief makers.
We also want to charge the police not to leave anything to chance. The swiftness with which they arrested Chidinma is highly commendable and same swiftness should be applied in the investigation and prosecution of the case as well as similar cases like these too in order to bring all the culprits to book.
Again, the police should trace all those behind the conspiracy theories and invite them for questioning to help the course of investigation. Most of them claim to know so much and that will help to unravel the entire case in record time.
It is our belief that so much will be learnt from this case. It is unfortunate that Ataga is not alive to give his own side of what really happened, so we have only heard from Chidinma and are now relying on the outcome of the main investigation to know how the whole drama played out.
We also urge those demonizing Chidinma to stop. She is also a victim, a victim of bad parenting, lack of love and improper upbringing. If found guilty, she will pay the price for her actions, that alone is traumatizing and so she should be allowed to deal with that. As it stands, she has lost everything ranging from her pursuit for a university degree, her self worth, her pride and so on.
As for Ataga, death came the wrong way. He was out on an adventurous fun mission but ended up in the mortuary. There are many of his likes out there but some of them today are criticizing him now for having an affair with a girl old enough to be his daughter.
While we don’t promote immorality, we will simply say according to the holy book that “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her”.
