Following the gruesome murder of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Michael Usifo Ataga by his 21-year-old girlfriend, Miss Chidinma Ojukwu, fear has gripped some married men in Bayelsa State.
Ataga, was stabbed severally on the neck by Chidinma, in a private short stay apartment in the Lekki Area of Lagos, after they had gone in to have a nice time.
According to Chidinma, the deceased had attempted to force himself on her for another round of sex which she declined, and in the heat of the moment, she stabbed him with a knife, claiming that she was under the influence of alcohol and the hard drugs they were both consuming.
In an interview with a cross section of married men in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, they described the incident as “shocking” and a setback for them, saying they will no longer feel comfortable with some of their girlfriends going forward.
According to them, having “side chics”, has become a way of life for them, as it is one way to reduce the everyday pressure and stress of work and family life but the death of Ataga has instilled fear in them.
A married man who simply gave his name as Osain, said he has been married for ten years and has been in different sexual relationships with some single girls, but will call it off for his own safety.
“Nobody wants to die like that. When I heard the story, I was really scared. I said to myself that I need to let all these girls go and focus on my marriage because it will be shameful to die like a chicken”, he said.
Another married man and a prominent politician in the state, who pleaded to be anonymous, said: “Something must kill a man, but the thing should not be what is sweet for us. Having young girls around us lowers our blood pressure but if they want to start killing us then we will leave them”.
Reacting to the issue, another famous politician in the state said it is only a desperate girl that will kill her benefactor and advised his fellow married men to be careful who they pick as girlfriends.
Ssaid Ataga has paid the supreme price but it is one case that should not scare men because it is not a frequent occurrence, noting that most of the girls do to them what their wives cannot do.
“The man’s case is an isolated one. It is one out of maybe one hundred thousand or even one million. I don’t believe that it should be enough to scare us, especially we Bayelsa men. More so, our girls don’t have that kind of heart. They can’t kill.
“This man and woman thing did not start today. I tell you something, you see that girl that killed that man, most men will still go for her if she is released. Some will even look for a way to release her and have sex with her. That is the way we are wired; very adventurous humans.
“Me, I have special babes that are decent and for some of them we have been together for up to five years. I take care of them very well. They even smoke and drink but have never allowed it get to them. That Chidinma girl was just a devil. She was out to kill the man intentionally”, he declared.
