The Bayelsa State Government has denied mandating anyone to request Cooperative Societies in the state to review their interest rates downwards.
Director New Media to Governor Douye Diri, Mr Samuel Kolawole Oredipe said the convener of the meeting acted on his own, and not with the knowledge or support of the state government.
One Frederick Sese, who claimed to be a Director of the State Bureau for Cooperative Development, gave the review order during a meeting with representatives of various cooperative societies operating in the state on Wednesday, May 19.
But Oredipe, in a statement said:
“I have been inundated with calls and social media comments on a purported statement circulating in the social media on the downward review of interest on contributions of Co-operative Societies in Bayelsa State.
“The said statement signed by one Frederick Sese, who addressed himself as Director, Bayelsa Bureau for Cooperative Development, I can tell you was not with the knowledge of His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri.
“We are not unaware of the tension and apprehension the statement has caused many investors and residents. We, however, call for patience and calm to allow for proper investigation.
“At the last count, I can reliably inform us that no substantive Director-General has been appointed for the Cooperative Development Bureau as the tenure of the last occupant of that office expired in January, 2020.
Oredipe assured the public that the government is on top of the situation.
