As the race to the 20th National Sports Festival enters the home stretch, there are strong indications that Covid-19 regulations may threaten the multi-sports Games.
The Festival holds in Benin City, the Edo State capital, from April 2 to 14, 2021.
While speaking to newsmen at Government House on Monday, March 15, the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, who is also the Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the festival, had said following a meeting earlier held with the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, it has been decided that all participating athletes and officials would comply with Covid-19 regulations.
According to the statement read by Shuaibu, “Edo State has reeled out several guidelines for the event, following a meeting earlier held with the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development”.
The statement read in part:
“The Main Organising Committee (MOC) has decided that all athletes/officials from the 36 states and the FCT participating in the National Sports Festival must take COVID-19 tests 72 hours before arrival for the tournament.
“All athletes/officials are to take COVID-19 vaccines at least 12 days before arrival for the tournament.
“Athletes/officials are to present certificates and documentation of COVID-19 tests and vaccination before they can be admitted into the Games Villages in the state.”
