Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus will miss out on the Champions League quarterfinals for the second consecutive year following an extra-time loss to Porto. The five times Ballon d’or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo who have always played at the quarter finals of the Champions League in the last 15 years of his football career has been denied of this wonderful privilege yesterday night.
It was a remarkable night in Turin as 10-man Porto stun Juve. Thanks to a Sérgio Oliveira free-kick in extra time with a score line that ended Juventus 3 Porto 2 but (4-4 on aggregate) with Porto qualifying for the quarter finals.
The teams that have knocked Juventus out of the Champions League since Cristiano Ronaldo joined the club includes : Ajax – 2019 during the quarter final, Lyon -2020 round of 16, Porto-2021 – round of 16.
Amazingly the goal that sent Juventus crashing out of the round 16 UEFA Champions League went through Cristiano Ronaldo’s legs and for the second successive season, Juventus are now exited in the round of 16 stage.
Ronaldo had always advanced to the quarter finals in the previous nine campaigns.
Federico Chiesa also made an amazing history been the first Italian player to score 2+ goals in a UEFA Champions League knockout stage game with Juventus since Filippo Inzaghi, in April 1999 against Manchester United.
Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo said, “His project in Turin is still in its early days and will continue despite his side crashing out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage on away goals against 10-man Porto on Tuesday.”
While FC Porto coach also believed yesterday’s winning made history for the club as seen below:
