The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), worldwide has called on all youths in the Ijaw Nation to defend themselves and their lands against attacks by suspected terrorists, masquerading as herdsmen.
The call, the IYC said has become imperative following recent mindless and unprovoked attack on a man and his son in Otuoke community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Otuoke is the hometown of former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
Spokesman of the IYC, Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe who made the call, said they will not fold their hands and watch the invasion and destruction of their communities by bandits.
Ekerefe, during a sympathy visit to the 18 year old boy, Kohgi Samuel Nation and his 58 year old father Mr. Goodhead Nation, at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa said such attack should not be allowed to happen again.
He expressed sadness over the incident but added that it is an isolated one, which does not warrant a reprisal attack but calls for vigilance to avoid a recurrence.
He said: “Let me say that this is not the first time the herdsman incident has happened but this attack is one too many. Considering the mood of the country, the Ijaw Youths should not carry out reprisal attack because it is an isolated case. We do not want to believe that the attack was planned but we must defend ourselves and our land.
“We want to call on security agencies to arrest the culprit. If the culprit is arrested it will reveal the real intent of the attack. The Hausa/Fulani Community in Bayelsa should show sympathy with the victim by ensuring the culprit is arrested. We don’t want to pre-empt anyone. They should come out to exonerate themselves.
“Ijaw youths should brace up and defend their clans against any form of enemy attacks. The Ijaw Youths should welcome any peace loving people and defend themselves against any form of threats”.
