The Nigeria women’s national basketball team also known as D’Tigress defeated their Malian counterparts 59-70 in the final of 2021 FIBA AfroBasket Championship which took place at Multipurpose Sports Complex, Yaounde, Cameroon to clinch its fifth title.
D’Tigress did not taking anything to chance as they finish the first quarter leading Mali by 11pts.
Mali 11 -22 Nigeria.
It took some time for Nigeria to find the bucket in the second quarter, and when they did it was back-to-back. Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah made a layup, and Ezinne Kalu followed it up with a steal to assist Promise Amukamara.
Mali 21 -26 Nigeria.
Mali came back into the game after outshooting Nigeria in the 2nd quarter by 13-9. However, D’Tigress go into the break leading Mali by 7pts.
Half time: Mali 24 -31 Nigeria.
The end of the third quarter saw D’Tigress lead their West African counterparts 59 – 38 heading into the final quarter with a 21 points lead.
And in the fourth quarter, the Nigerians maintained control over their opponents and saw out the game-winning 70 points to 59 or the Malians.
D’Tigress have now won the last three editions of the women’s AfroBasket.
Recall that, D’Tigress first won the afro basket women title in 2003 (Mozambique) and retained it in 2005 (Abuja). With the win in 2003, Nigeria represented Africa at the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece. The D’Tigresss began their quest to secure a third successive women’s Afrobasket title, with a 66-48 victory over Mozambique in their group B opener.
