The just-confirmed Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has cleared the air on some corruption charges allegedly levelled against him.
Bawa, while fielding questions from Senators on Wednesday on the floor of the Upper Legislative Chamber, answered some questions thrown at him concerning an allegation to the effect that he sold 244 trucks, which were forfeited assets in the custody of the EFCC, when he was Zonal Head of Port Harcourt Office.
While responding to the question, he said:
anybody that is familiar with the processes and workings of the EFCC knows that not even the executive chairman of the EFCC has the power to dispose a single asset. That responsibility lies with the office of the secretary of the Commission
I am saying this to confirm to Nigerians and indeed this honourable chambers that I never for once, sold a single asset in Port Harcourt, I never did.
The then secretary of the commission, flew into Port Harcourt together with three directors and some senior staff of the commission and disposed of the trucks and other assets involved, that were forfeited to the federal government.

Speaking further, Bawa was full of praise for himself and the strides he achieved in the commission when he took over as zonal head in Port Harcourt. He recounted how he raised the bar of convictions in the commission from 33 to 250 in his time in office, He attributed this growth to the special way the commission was headed by him.
Bawa’s appointment, which elicited so much reaction, has been welcomed by some Nigerians, who believe the appointment is a step in the right direction towards youth representation in the Buhari-led administration.
