The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi has announced that the state is delivering fire-fighting equipment and appliances to fire stations across the state as part of measures to boost firefighting, particularly as the dry season approaches.
Fayemi, who expressed happiness that fire disasters had reduced in the state since 2019, attributed it to the synergy among all relevant institutions working to prevent fire outbreaks in the state.
He promised that his administration will continue to support the Ekiti State Fire Service in its effort to improve response times and, as a result, reduce the number of people killed or injured in fire outbreaks and other emergencies.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, who spoke at the Passing-Out Parade of the newly-recruited 59 fire personnel made up of 42 men and 17 women, into the Ekiti State Fire Service in Ado Ekiti, said, “Some fire equipment and appliances are being refurbished to be distributed to fire stations across the state.”
The fire equipment and appliances were undergoing refurbishment, according to a statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Deputy Governor, Odunayo Ogunmola, titled, ’59 new officers recruited into Ekiti Fire Service.’
The equipment to be supplied to the fire stations in the state include five fire engines, one water tanker, and a water reservoir to be distributed to fire stations without engines and those yet to have one, including the Oja Oba Ultramodern Market, Ado Ekiti.
He commended Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) for approving the establishment of a Federal Fire Service Command in Ekiti State and the provision of one firefighting truck to complement the state government’s efforts to prevent fire outbreaks.
Earlier, Mr Bamidele Faparusi, the Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, said the Fayemi administration had repositioned the Fire Service, which he said had been abandoned by the previous administration.
Faparusi, who underscored the importance of fire service to the state economy, lauded Fayemi for quickly approving the proposal to hire 59 new firefighters to ensure excellent service delivery to the people.
