An infectious disease expert, Dr. Abejegah Chuks has called for the vaccination of between 70 and 85 percent of the population if Nigeria was to overcome the ravages of COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Abejegah made the call during a health talk he delivered at the opening ceremony of the 2021 Bemore Summer Bootcamp held at Ilaramokin, Ifedore LGA of Ondo State on Monday.
Abejegah said the goal of vaccination is to help a large population of the country achieve health immunity so that the spread of the virus is curtailed or stopped totally in the country.
The expert who said COVID-19 was fast killing people in the country urged Nigerians to ignore the conspiracy theories surrounding the pandemic and protect themselves from infection.
He emphasized on the observance of the non-pharmaceutical protocols like regular hand-washing under running water, avoidance of touching one’s nose and eyes and wearing of face mask while in large gatherings to prevent infection.
He disclosed that there are four vaccines available in the country but warned against being vaccinated with more than one vaccine.
According to him, the vaccines are not interchangeable as anybody who starts with any should complete vaccination with same vaccine.
Describing the vaccines as safe and effective, he disclosed that the virus was killing the rich, the middle class and the elderly especially those who have underlying diseases like diabetes and cancer.
He listed fever, tiredness, nasal congestion and vomiting as some of the symptoms of disease, advising healthy people to avoid anyone coughing and sneezing in order to avoid infection.
Abejegah revealed Ondo as the ninth most burdened state in the federation but said Lassa Fever was still killing more persons in the state than COVID-19.
