Property worth millions of naira have been destroyed by fire at a residential storey building situated at road 3, Adesuper Street in Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area of the state.

Fire

Niger Delta gathered that the incident took place on Sunday evening and caught people unaware as the upper floor of a storey building in the street was suddenly engulfed by smoke and quickly grew into an inferno which razed down the building.

Eyewitnesses accounts indicated that the fire incident could have been caused by a spark from an electric appliance in the building as the occupants of the upper floor of the building were not at home when the unfortunate incident occurred.

They also narrated how the incident was stopped from escalating through the gallant efforts of neighbours and men of the Federal Fire Services who helped put out the fire even though it had already destroyed properties worth several millions of naira.

An eyewitness, Ayorinde Alex said “around 1pm this afternoon, people in the street noticed that smoke was coming out from the roof of the building. So, we ran to the place to rescue those who were there. People really tried their best to stop the fire but the upper floor of the building was completely burnt down. The street lacks water supply and that made it more difficult for us. We were able to contact the Fire Service and they came down and help put out the fire.”

He added that the fire was reportedly caused by an electric spark in one of the rooms as there was nobody inside the upper part of the building when the incident occurred. He also praised the men of the federal fire service for responding to the people’s call.

His words, “I must say sincerely that in the last three decades that I have been alive, I have never seen Fire Service men in action in Ondo like they did today. People doubted that they will come, but they did and that gives us hope that Nigeria can definitely get better.”

As at the time of filing this report, details about the actual cause of the fire incident remain sketchy.
