Getting a job especially in Nigeria without any job experience can be frustrating. Basically you may not get a job without work experience, yet you cannot get any experience without having a job. Such an irony that keeps job seekers in a dreaded position. It discourages one from applying.
1. Build contacts
A more profitable way to get a job without any experience is to be recommended. However, you must be outstanding and fitting for a job before you get that call. So in order to get a recommendation from someone, start building your contacts. Networking opens ways and opportunities. Meet people both offline and online. Your friends and religious buddies are good try to begin with. You can hook up with people who are building career in the field you also desire.
Maggie Mistal, a career coach said the best way to get your foot in the door is through strategic relationship building in the form of informational interviews.
“Even at a cocktail event, just asking someone what they do is the start of an informational interview, “It gets you the information you need and it gets you the relationships you didn’t have.” Maggie said.
2. Attend workshops and seminars
Workshops and seminars have a way of helping you to know about jobs, getting you certified and also show your dedication and commitment to getting a job. At workshops and seminars, you are trained and you meet people as well as resource persons.
3. Get Skills
Your skills, including soft skills like organizational skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, public speaking, and a host of other skills, have a long way of landing you into that job. It is therefore advisable to get those basic skills. They can be learned and most times are acquired for free. Technology has made that easier for us.
Let these skills reflect in your cv and explain how the skills can be used in the company when you are employed.
“Whether it’s volunteer work, a leadership position within an organization, a part-time gig or helping a friend build a social media presence for their business, nearly all professionals, regardless of experience, have skills and prior achievements they can bring to the table”. Courtney Connley, reporter with CNBC.
4. Get paid/unpaid job
One of the ways to get that job without any experience is to willingly do a job with little or no pay. Volunteering which is usually not easy, is a way of getting yourself into having a job. Apart from helping one to get the needed experience, you could also be converted into a full time staff when opportunities are available. Become an intern or a freelancer for a while and see turn around after. Sometimes, the company gives transportation allowance and other little allowances.
In fact to fill up the years of experience required, you can include all the work-related things you did while in school, during your holidays, even those times you went to your mum’s business area to assist her in sales or those moments at your dad’s place of work where you assisted him to type on the system and did one or two connections.
They could be regarded as work experience. However, tailor them in such a manner that will leave the recruiter with no option than to call for interview or give you the job.
5. Be an expert
It’s true you don’t have job experience but you went to a tertiary institution and studied a course for not less than three years. Why not act like an expert in your field while drafting your CV and when you are eventually invited for an interview. Let the recruiter know about the assignment you did, the practical and group works.
Let your CV tell who are. Be enthusiastic and show that you are irresistible.
