The Young Progressives Party candidate for Ohafia north state constituency, Abia state Dr Oge Okpani Ndukwe described as devastating the effect of flash flooding in Nkporo, Ohafia local government area, Abia state.
He stated this yesterday, in Ukwa Nkporo during an assessment visit of the affected communities in Nkporo.
The flood which destroyed buildings, crops and animals in Ukwa, Okwoko, Agbaja, Ndinko, Obuofia and Elughu communities also displaced some indigenes.
Earlier Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Abia state, Mr Sunday Jackson led a joint team that included officer National Emergency Management Agency NEMA to conduct an assessment to get approval to provide relief assistance to indigenes of the community.
He stated that the cause of the flooding is a result of a biannual upsurge from river iroiiin in Nkporo. Jackson noted that the mandate of SEMA and NEMA doesn’t involve civil works or construction projects, adding that the agency will ensure that the attention of other relevant government agencies will be drawn to the community.
He advised indigenes not to block drainages and to move away from flood-prone areas.
Dr Ndukwe an indigene of Ukwa, Nkporo was on the ground to receive the team of SEMA and NEMA officials, alongside the President General of Nkporo, the Ezeogo, Eze nwanyi among other executives.
Ndukwe visited all the affected communities on foot to feel the pulse of the indigenes and made cash donations; while pledging to seek ways to provide a lasting solution to the disaster.
Recall that Abia state was mentioned as part of the highly probable flood risk areas during the Public Presentation of the Disaster Risk Management Implications of the 2022 flood predictions by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
