Legendary former Cameroonian Striker, Samuel Eto’o, celebrated his 40th birthday on Wednesday March 10, 2021.
Eto’o is seen as one of the greatest African footballers of all time He won the “African Player of the Year” award four times: in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2010 (the most by any player and an honour he shares with the Ivorian, Yaya Touré). In 2005 he came third in the Ballon D’or which was his closest ever in the FIFA World Best Player ranking.
The Ex-Barcelona first came to the limelight during his stint for UCB Douala, a second-division club, in the 1996 Cup of Cameroon. At the age of 16, he was admired by Real Madrid, who signed him in 1997, though he never made it to their first team.
According to the Punch, The 40 year old became a prominent figure for Cameroon during the 2000 African Cup of Nations, where he scored four goals in the tournament, including a crucial goal against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
In a very illustrious playing career that saw him feature for the likes of ; FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Anzhi Makhachkala and among others, Eto’o scored 427 goals, won 2 African Cup of Nations, 1 Olympic Gold medal, 3 Champions League trophies, 1 FIFA Club World Cup, 3 La Liga titles, 2 Spanish Cup, 2 Spanish Super Cup, 1 Serie A titles, 2 Italian Cup, and 1 Italian Super Cup.
On September 7, 2019, Eto’o announced his retirement from playing active football.
