Former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan’s profile is rising by the day as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed him as Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of the Wise.
According to GoldenNewsng, former Executive Secretary of the Mano River Union of Guinea, Madam Hadja Saran Daraba was appointed as the vice-chairman of the Council of the Wise
￼Jonathan’s new appointment is contained in a statement published on ECOWAS’ website after a two-day meeting in Ghana, which ended on May 25, 2021.
In his capacity as special envoy, Jonathan has been involved in facilitating dialogue with all principal stakeholders in Mali’s leadership crisis
Jonathan’s mediation efforts were instrumental to the release of Mali’s interim President, Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister, Moctar Ouane, who had been under the custody of the country’s military.
Nigerdeltaconnect gathered that the Council of the Wise, established in 1999 had been moribund for years but was recently reconstituted as a result of the socio-political crises hat have been plaguing countries across the region.
Topmost of the challenges bedeviling the West Africa region including Nigeria, are terrorism and social unrest.
GoldenNewsng reports that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, has charged the new leadership of the council to “assist ECOWAS in delivering on its peace and stability mandate as a necessary condition for continuous development and regional integration efforts”.
