The South South Interim Coordinator of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), Comrade Piriye Kiyaramo has charged hospitality business establishments to pay serious attention to customer service.
Comrade Kiyaramo gave the charge while speaking with members of the Travel Writers’ Corps of the Bayelsa State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at “Aquarium Leisure”, a newly-opened bar located at the Oxbow Lake Resort, Swali, Yenagoa.
Kiyaramo, who spoke as part of activities to commemorate this year’s National Tourists Appreciation Day, said in addition to infrastructure and security, the hospitality industry relies most on exceptional customer service.
According to him, “tourists provide essential boost to many local economies, and for that reason, we should be thankful to them as they visit our cities and business establishments.”
He pointed out that while all other businesses can benefit from positive customer service, it is particularly important that tourism enterprises give special attention to customer service.
Kiyaramo, who is on the list of 100 top tourism personalities in Nigeria, further said if hospitality businesses do not give priority attention to customer service, they would have themselves to blame as their businesses would attract fewer customers and by extension generate fewer sales”.
He said when a customer has an excellent experience with a business, he or she will remember that business, thereby increasing the chance of future patronage, stressing the need for hospitality businesses to be nice to tourists and treat them with utmost caution because of the sensitive nature of the hospitality sector.
The South-South interim coordinator of ATPN also emphasized the importance of staff training on customer service to give the tourists good and lasting impression of tourists hosting destination during their visits.
According to Comrade Kiyaramo, who doubles as chairman of the Travel Writers’ Corps in Bayelsa State, “hospitality sector includes all businesses where customer relations is a core component, such as hotels, restaurants, bars, resorts, theme parks and tourist destinations”.
Earlier, manager of Aquarium Leisure, Mr. Innocent Miebi, had received the entourage of the ATPN South South interim coordinator and expressed joy that his outfit was selected as venue to mark this year’s National Tourists Appreciation Day celebration in Bayelsa State.
