The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri has commissioned the Kaiama Referral Hospital in Kolokuma/Opokuma local government area, which was started over 40 years ago by the administration of Late Melford Okilo.
The Governor while speaking at the event said he was delighted to commission the massive hospital which will not only serve Kaiama but all communities in the local government area, saving them the hassle of always coming into Yenagoa, the state capital when they have health emergencies.
He noted that the hospital was continued during the immediate past administration and was finally completed by his administration, which he described as a great feat.
Governor Diri particularly praised the efforts of the Commissioner for Health in ensuring that such a massive project was completed in one month and charged him with the responsibility of overseeing the completion of three other hospitals in the state.
He said, “I understand that this project started in 1980 by Late Melford Okilo and my predecessor took it to 60 percent and we achieved this stage of completion in one month.
“I have received briefings on similar projects in other Local Government Areas. I hereby direct the Commissioner for Health to ensure completion of the ongoing referral hospitals in Sagbama, Ekeremor, Ogbia and Oporoma within this fiscal year.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Pabara Newton Igwele said it was a daunting task to complete the project in such a short time, but was grateful that he and his team were able to bring to reality the desires of the Governor, to have a well equipped and effective hospital.
He added that the hospital has consulting rooms, an accident and emergency Ward, fully equipped laboratories, a theatre, male, female, labour and paediatric wards, doctors and nurses call rooms, among others.
Dr. Igwele emphasized that the governor promised he would not play politics with the health of Bayelsans and that is what he has proven beyond doubt with the completion of the health facility.
On his part, the Ibedaowei of Kolokuma Clan, King Onya Mozi Agara said they are excited to have Diri as their Governor, who is concerned about bringing speedy development to the community and local government area.
He said they usually go to Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa and other hospitals for treatment which has led to loss of lives in some cases and thanked the Governor for making the completion of the hospital a reality.
