Gunmen on Sunday evening abducted the wife of the General Manager of Imo Zoological Garden and Wild Life Park, Nekede in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state, Elizabeth Abioye.
Our correspondent gathered that the abduction took place at First Baptist Church located on Wetheral Road Owerri while the woman was communing with God and other brethren.
A source said the armed abductors who rode in a Sienna Ash colour bus with tinted glass stormed the church and whisked her away without any challenge.
The source said; “The wife of Mr. Francis Abioye, the General Manager of Imo State Zoo was kidnapped about 10 minutes ago at First Baptist Church by Fire Service.
“The kidnappers entered the church and whisked her away. They operated on a Sienna Ash Colour tinted glass.”
It was learnt that the abductors zoomed off as soon as they seized their prey without any challenge as the church had no security officers manning its premises at the time.
Members of the church gathered in twos and threes bemoaning the fate that befell their member.
Recall that Francis Abioye, the General Manager of Imo Zoological Garden and Wildlife Park, Nekede was recently sent on compulsory leave by the state government.
Our correspondent learnt that Abioye was sent on the compulsory leave following several panels’ reports which indicted him of mismanaging the zoo.
He was said to have refused to hand over and locked up his office since he was sent on the compulsory leave.
A government official who spoke on condition of anonymity described the kidnap of Abioye’s wife as very strange and a terrible thing that no one should wish even his worst enemy.
He urged the police to unravel the circumstances surrounding the kidnap in order to restore confidence in the citizens that abduction has not returned to the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, CSP Michael Abattam was yet to respond to enquiries made by our correspondent as at the time of filing the report.
