Kidnapping seems to be on the increase as unknown gunmen attack passengers along the Osogbo/Ibokun road in Osun State.

Reports say the attack was carried out on the night of Tuesday, March 2. It was gathered that the gunmen barricaded the road and stopped vehicles from moving and shooting sporadically into the air. The criminals were said to have abducted several passengers and killed at least one person.

According to reports, the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. at Aje Bamidele village in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State.

The Corps Field Commander of the local security outfit, Amotekun, Amitolu Shittu, who confirmed the incident, stated that the gunmen launched the attack with AK-47 rifles, reports Legit.ng.

“One person was killed by the gunmen while they abducted yet-to-be-known number of travellers. We saw pellets of AK-47 used at the scene of the crime. We are still combing the forest to rescue those that were kidnapped.” he said.

He further noted that search and rescue operations had commenced while assuring the public that the abducted persons would be rescued and the perpetrators brought to book

An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity for fear of reprisal attack on the community,  told newsmen that many vehicles plying the road during the gunmen attack hurriedly made a U-turn.

He added that the gunmen robbed the passengers of their money and other valuables and left the scene after shooting one of their victims.
The remains of the deceased, whose identity could not be ascertained, has been deposited at the state’s hospital in Osogbo.
