It was gathered that the gunmen, fully armed, raided the travellers along Ikere-Ekiti-Iju road in the evening of Saturday, March 13, 2021.
According to the Ekiti State Police Command spokesperson, Sunday Abutu, while confirming the reports, told newsmen that the gunmen attacked the bus between Ikere-Ekiti and Iju, a border town in Ondo State.
It will be recalled that Nigerdeltaconnect had earlier reported the attack on travellers along Benin-Ore express way by armed robbers, who reportedly killed one in the attack.
The PPRO revealed the driver of the bus beat a hasty retreat to Ilupeju-Ikere Divisional Police Headquarters in Ekiti to report the incident to the command.
According to him, the gunmen opened fire on them killing a passenger who was hit by a bullet. The yet to be identified passenger was said to have died after he was rushed to an hospital.
Speaking further, Abutu disclosed that the police have launched a manhunt to arrest the gunmen, adding that the team would join forces with the Ondo State command to achieve success.
He also stated that a discreet investigation has begun to unravel the incident, promising that the team would track down and arrest the perpetrators and would bring them to book.
He also assured that his team would do everything within its reach to locate the missing passengers, and would rescue them from the criminals.
In his words,“The driver was brave enough to have speedily escaped with his passengers from the scene but in the process, one of the passengers was unfortunately hit by a bullet and was rushed to General Hospital, Ikere-Ekiti where he later died.
“The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police has implored everyone in the State not to panic as the Command shall join forces with the Ondo State Police Command to ensure that the perpetrators are made to face the full wrath of the law.” Naija news quoted him as saying.
