Less than a week after unknown gunmen raided the Diete Koki Memorial Hospital Opolo, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, suspected robbers have attacked a member of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) who is attached to the same hospital.
Some unidentified gunmen had in the early hours of last Tuesday raided the hospital and carted away some amount of cash and other valuables belonging to the doctors on duty, patients and their relatives.
The hoodlums were alleged to have gained access to the hospital from the perimeter fence behind the building and gained entrance to the wards and offices after forcing their way through.
In the latest incident, an eyewitness confirmed that it occurred at about 8pm on Saturday, September 4, in front of the hospital when the victim identified as, Ogechi Wilfred, went to get an item at a store beside the medical facility.
A management staff who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the four-man gang came with a tricycle, popularly known as Keke, accosted Ogechi and dispossessed her of all her valuables.
According to the management staff, the items stolen from the victim include two ATM cards, a phone and some cash.
“They targeted her and accosted her just in front of the hospital and took all she had on her before zooming away with the Keke Napep that they brought”, the staff said.
He further said that the incident has since been reported to the Ekeki Police Division under whose jurisdiction the robbery occurred, for further action.
The State Police Command was yet to react to the incident as at the time of filing this report on Sunday.
The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Fetepigi, had, while reacting to the incident of last Tuesday, expressed sadness, describing it as a barbaric act.
Dr. Fetepigi said the management of the hospital will collaborate with the Ministry of Health to ensure that measures are put in place to forestall future occurrence.
