Unknown gunmen on Tuesday shot and killed an unidentified man and injured 3 others along Erepa road in Yenagoa the Bayelsa State capital.
The three others who sustained various degree of injuries were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa where they are currently receiving treatment.
It is not clear as the time of this report if the gunmen were assassins or armed robbers but an eyewitness told NIGER DELTA CONNECT, that the men numbering about four came in a blue painted tricycle, and after the shooting spree they drove towards the Isaac Boro Expressway.
The Acting Chairman of the Bayelsa State Volunteers, Hon. Lucky Oyinkuro Asanakpo, who confirmed the incident, said security agencies and the state government are on top of the matter.
He said: “I had to personally intervene in order to forestall any crisis between the Hausa settlers and the indigenes of the area as the victims of the attack were northern Muslims.
“We cannot afford any ethnic conflict in the state. Governor Douye Diri has always preached peace and want to maintain that peace in the interest of the public”.
Hon. Asanakpo advised the people not to take the laws into their hands, adding that the state government will take drastic action against the perpetrators of the heinous crime.
He charged them to be patient, as the culprits will be fished out and made to face the full weight of the law.
