Hoodlums have killed four Policemen and carting away two of their rifles, along Akai Effa-Idundu Road in Calabar, the Cross River State capital. The incident took place at about 2.00 am on Thursday.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the incident, said: “It is quite unfortunate and we feel really sad and in mourning mood about the death of the four officers who lost their lives. We are investigating the matter and will surely fish out the culprits no matter how far they run or hide. We must get them arrested, that I can assure you”, reports Sun News.

It was gathered that a resident of the neighbourhood, Okon Asuquo, said they heard sporadic gunshots, which were followed by sounds of motorcycles in the wee hours of the morning of Thursday

Continuing, Asuquo said they could not step at when they heard the gunshots but at about 5 00 a.m. when they eventually came out, they saw four bodies of policemen riddled with bullets, adding that there were two rifles by the side of the policemen.

The Sun reports further that “a neigbhour, who lives by the roadside said hoodlums struck the police checkpoint and killed the policemen on duty”.

The witness said the dastardly act could have carried out by men suspected to be kidnappers, adding that they now live in fear in an area that hitherto had been quiet and calm.
