How to find joy and satisfaction in your job

There are times one may feel like quitting a job because one is not getting paid enough for the hard work and effort being put in or probably because one is not being appreciated.

However it may be, quitting a job is not the best option especially when you do not have a replacement yet.

Anyway, joy and satisfaction are subjective concepts. Some persons may equate monetary benefits with the joy and satisfaction they derive from a job. Some derive theirs when their hard-work is recognized and appreciated.

A friendly environment at work, for some persons is an essential requisite for deriving pleasure.

No matter what the standards are, being satisfied and contented with our jobs and careers is crucial for maintaining the ‘work-life’ balance.

It is not out of place when you have that feeling of lack of joy and dissatisfaction in your jobs or businesses. However, allowing it to linger for long could be detrimental to you.

“Job” and “joy” have one letter between them, but for many they’re like chalk and cheese, oil and water, or snakes and mongooses- Steve Errey, a confidence coach.

One can actually derive Joy and satisfaction from the jobs, businesses, projects they handle. Motivation is one important thing that is needed. Others and things around you can be a source of motivation. You can also decide to motivate yourself.

Some staff of the Niger Delta Connect team were asked how they get motivated at work as well as what gives them joy and satisfaction at work. They have these to say:

Ayibanua “  I get motivated at work by some of the people I work with here. They propel me to do more. Also when I go out to conduct vox pop, I meet a lot of persons, these people actually push me to want to do more.”

When asked about how and where she derives joy and satisfaction with regards to her work, she said: ”I derive joy from my job because I love what I do, which is being in front of the camera.”

She advised that one should think of what makes them happy. “Make conscious efforts to improve on what you do and be better at it and by so doing, joy and satisfaction will come because there is an improvement”, she said.

Doubra, another staff said, the fact that everyone relates as one motivates her. According to her, “Everyone relates as family and that’s what makes me perform better.”

For her, the joy and satisfaction come as a result of the opportunities presented to her to learn something new.

Stanley said the motivation he gets is based on the fact that he doesn’t have to stay idle doing nothing at home.  According to him, “I get motivated when I remember that I have needs to meet and that I won’t have to go begging because I have a job.”

Stanley loves driving and has passion for being on motion. His present job presents him that opportunity so he derives joy and satisfaction in that regard.

Love what you do

Love is a choice. It is active and not passive. Choose to love what you do because that is one of the ways you can derive satisfaction and joy. The more you hate what you do, the more you’ll keep loosing it and eventually making you want to quit. You should rather start loving instead of hating. These people love what they do and that’s where they derive their joy and satisfaction from.

Don’t isolate yourself

See people you work with as your extended family. Your work environment should be home away from home. Instead of isolating yourself from them and concentrating only on work, chat and laugh with them.

Appreciate your current job:

Be grateful for the current job you have rather than complaining over little things.

Be passionate about your job

When you are passionate about what you do, it will drive you towards having a positive outcome.
