Research has it that everyone has had reasons to be shy in one way or the other. In fact, four out of 10 people consider themselves shy. Most successful public speakers have also experienced stage fright in their careers. The good news is that they never allowed that to affect them.
Shyness can have a grip on people and limits one from self-expression. Shy people tend to experience anxiety and speaking up is usually an issue.
Amazingly, one can overcome shyness. Although, this comes with determination, a desire to change and efforts put in place.

1. Identify the triggers
If you are shy and willing to overcome it. The first thing you’ll do is to identify the causes of your shyness. Find out why you prefer to remain in your shell rather than expressing yourself. Some persons can relate well with friends and families but develop anxiety when it comes to relating with others outside this sphere. Some persons their triggers is speaking in front of a crowd, others could be shy towards a person they are asking someone out. Identify these reasons and plan ahead on how to manage the situations when they surface. Most times practicing before time what to do when faced with triggers will help a lot.
2. Admit that you are shy or Keep it to yourself
Whenever I feel shy being in a new place or talking with someone, I don’t hesitate to express how I feel at that moment. It helps me to build confidence and overcome that shyness at that particular time. For others, they feel better keeping it to themselves and developing ways to overcome it. Whichever one is good for you, you can choose to tell or not.
3. Never allow inner critic
Another way to overcome shyness is not to allow inner critic. Never allow your mind to tell you that you have a problem and that’s why you are shy. Identify yourself as a unique person who is ready to come out of her cocoon
4. Equip yourself with enough information.
One of the major ways to overcome shyness is to dully equip yourself with enough information. When you are knowledgeable about so many things you can easily talk about them with people. Find out trending topics so that you can fit in whenever there’s a discussion when you hang out or if are at a party.
5. Develop eye contact.
Don’t stay in your shell. Make eye contact. Try as much as possible to do this. Making eye contact shows that you are demonstrating your confidence and also connecting with the other person or persons. People who make eye contact are seen as friendly and welcoming.
6. Know your strengths.
Another tip for overcoming shyness and building confidence is to draft out a list of all your strengths. Your positive qualities will remind you that you are important and that there other unique features about you.
7. Choose the right relationships
Choose your friends wisely. Right friends and relationship will push you to get better. The ones who will always tell you the truth and help you discover innate abilities. The ones that will help you to be firm and more confident in yourself. Give your time to the people in your life who are warm, willing to accept your person, responsive, and encouraging.
