Erstwhile Deputy Governor of Imo State, Gerald Irona has said he was neither invited nor arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Report on some online platforms had claimed that Irona was intercepted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja by the antigraft agency over alleged financial malfeasance.
The report claimed that the ex-deputy governor during the administration of Emeka Ihedioha was involved in the collection of N400million monthly from the Imo State Oil Producing Areas Commission.
The report further claimed that Irona was also under investigation for allegedly mismanaging N5billion counterpart funds for the Rural Access Mobility Project (RAMP).
It added that the former deputy governor did not return his passport to the EFCC after using it last year.
But Irona in a statement signed by his media aide, Walter Duru declared the report false and without any iota of truth.
He added that the former deputy governor has no case with the EFCC.
Duru said; “The report is false in its entirety and has no iota of truth in it. Former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Hon. (Engr) Gerald Irona has no case with the EFCC.
“The fact that the writer neither contacted the EFCC spokesman nor the spokesman of the former Deputy Governor for confirmation clearly shows the intention of the sponsors of the false report.
According to Duru, for the avoidance of doubt, the former deputy governor was neither invited nor arrested by operatives of the EFCC or any other law enforcement agency in the country
He added that Irona is not under any form of investigation whatsoever, describing the allegation of misappropriation of ISOPADEC funds as laughable.
Duru submitted that the former deputy governor was never the Chief Executive Officer of the commission and could not have been in charge of the commission’s funds.
The media aide dismissed the allegation of mismanaging RAMP funds as untrue, stressing that the former deputy governor never managed any RAMP funds.
He equally refuted claim that Irona didn’t return his passport to the EFCC, saying he was never at any time a guest of the agency which did not at any time seize his passport.
According to Duru, “Gerald Irona is a responsible and patriotic, law-abiding Nigerian and will not waste a second in responding to any call or invitation from any constituted authority.
“In and out of office, Gerald Irona has lived a transparent, disciplined and decent lifestyle, worthy of emulation.”
He threatened to seek legal remedy for “this brazen and irresponsible spread of outright falsehood even as he urged the public to disregard the false report.”
According to Duru, the short-lived administration of Emeka Ihedioha is on record as most focused and transparent government in the annals of the state.
