The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Central Zone on Wednesday embarked on a peaceful protest to the Yenagoa office of the Port-Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC).
Spokesman of the IYC Central Zone, Comrade Dee Mitin explained that the protest was to express their displeasure over the epileptic power supply in Yenagoa and its environ by the company.
He noted that the protest was not politically motivated and devoid of any form of inducement but insist was a patriotic call to action.
“The PHEDC Yenagoa office should be closed down. Our people cannot be paying bills to PHEDC and be unable to enjoy what they paid for. This is the motive behind today’s protest to the PHEDC.
“Anyone bringing government politics into this is just an enemy of progress and an agent of disunity among Ijaws. With council name and we stand to condemn that act in totality.
“We will continue to remain focus, steadfast and proactive in ensuring we do our part for the interest and benefit of Bayelsans”, he said.
A staff of the company lamented that they could not gain entrance into the compound after arriving this morning.
He stated that it was confusing as the IYC did not give any prior warning before taking the action.
He said: “They just locked the office. We do not know their reason for doing this as they did not send a letter to the office. Only that there was speculation that some areas do not have light.
“If this persists, most areas would suffer. Already, due to the storm of yesterday, there are some internal issues that we have to work on but our access to the building is restricted.
“At the end of the day, we hope to resolve the issues as we have reached out to the Secretary of the Council to understand the reasoning behind everything”.
