A former adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe, claimed on Friday, August 13, that former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) had him in mind when describing the next ideal president.
Last week, Babangida stated that the future president must be a person who communicates to the people, understands the economy, and has friends in all regions.
“I’ve begun to imagine a terrific Nigerian leader. That is, someone who travels around the country and makes friends almost everywhere he goes, and knows at least one person with whom he can communicate,” IBB explained.
IBB “had me in mind” when he enumerated those attributes, Okupe claimed in an interview on Friday.
“There isn’t a single local government in this country that I haven’t visited five times,” he remarked. I’m the most well-prepared candidate for president.
“I feel IBB got it right; believe me when I say that. That person should be able to pick up the phone and call at least one person in each of the country’s local governments.
“The former presidential adviser explained, “That means he must be someone who has socially connected throughout portions of Nigeria and understands the terrain.”
“I’m in my sixties, and based on what IBB has said — I haven’t spoken to him — I have a feeling he was thinking of me. I’m sure I’m one of the three people he was thinking of.
“Believe me, there isn’t a single local government in this country that I haven’t visited five times. And I’m the most well-prepared candidate for President.”
No doubt, being the former S.A to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, he must have covered quite some areas in the country, making friends and creating a synergy between the people, but is he really amongst the first three presidential candidates of IBB? Only time will tell.
