The Imo State House of Assembly has endorsed the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma for a second term.
The speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibeh gave the endorsement on Friday, February 18 while addressing some newspaper publishers that visited him in his office at the assembly complex.
Ibeh said Gov. Uzodimma has acquitted himself creditably in delivering the goods, stressing that having performed superlatively, the governor deserves a second term since one good term deserves another.
He said; “You know of the constitutional endorsement which approves a second term. And the governor you will agree is performing well. The direction he is going, I endorse him for a second term”.
The speaker clarified that only three members of the House had been suspended since he mounted the saddle as speaker.
According to him, three of the six members of the House currently on suspension were slammed with suspension before his emergence as speaker.
He insisted that the members suspended under his watch actually deserved their fate having absented themselves from plenaries during deliberations on the 2022 fiscal proposals.
The speaker hinted that one of the suspended members is showing sufficient remorse and might be recalled soon.
He emphasized that the House under his leadership will not gloss over breach of rules of the House or constitutional provisions.
Ibeh cited the declaration of the seat of the member representing Ngor/Okpala State Constituency, Tochi Okereke vacant for absenting himself from plenaries as action that might have sent signal that it is no longer business as usual.
He however expressed surprise that the sacked member has not spoken up with by himself or provy since his ouster from the House.
The speaker, who clarified that the House enacted Law No 2 of 2021 empowering the state governor to establish Ebubeagu security outfit listed his achievements within the three months he has been speaker to include restoring sanity in the House to the extent that both members and staff take the business of the House very seriously.
He disclosed that he had also mounted a training programme for members and senior staff of the assembly and renovated the assembly temporary complex to make it conducive for legislative business.
The speaker lauded Governor Uzodimma for approving the commencement of total renovation work at the main assembly complex.
Ibeh, a two-time member who represents Obowo State Constituency said he could only agree to seek a third term if the demand emanates from his constituents, stressing that he would not see it as ‘repeating a class’.
