The Imo State Commissioner for Transport, Chief Rex Anunobi, has called for regular and sustained use of bicycle in the state.
Anunobi made the call when he received Imo Bicycle Riders and officials of Federal Road Safety Corps, Imo State Command, in commemoration of the United Nations Bicycle Day in his office at the State Secretariat, Port Harcourt Road, Owerri.
The commissioner explained that the use of bicycle is not only simple and affordable as a means of transportation but environmental friendly.
He attributed the gains of bicycle riding to culture of peace and social inclusion.
Anunobi promised that going forward, the Ministry of Transport would collaborate and partner with the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC in promoting and sustaining the use of bicycle in the state.

Earlier in his brief presentation, the Sector Commander, FRSC, Imo State Command, Corps Commander Kalu Okore, said that the event is to acknowledge the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries.
The commander further explained that the day is marked “to encourage stakeholders to emphasize and advance the use of the bicycle as a means of fostering sustainable development, strengthening education, including physical education, for children and young people, promoting health and preventing disease, promoting tolerance, mutual understanding and respect and facilitating social inclusion and a culture of peace”.
He therefore solicited for the cooperation and partnership of the Commissioner for Transport in promoting the use of bicycles in the state.
